Leroux) の原作小説「オペラ座の怪人」はもともとフランス語ですが、なぜか英語訳ばかりが次々と出版されます。というわけで、まずは英語訳・各バージョンをサクサク見てみましょう。 表紙だけでもいろいろありますね。とりあえず主なものは、 |

 「オペラ座の怪人」の原作小説を、レナード・ウルフさんが新たに英訳し、逐一注釈をつけた本です。その注釈の量がただごとではありません。本文三行、残り全部注釈、というページも多いです。とてもためになる解説からどうでもいいツッコミまで、とにかく幅が広いです。様々な神話モチーフと「オペラ座の怪人」との関連性についての記述とか、エリックの鼻についての考察（？）とか、いろいろ小ネタが充実していて楽しめました。とりあえず原作を読んではみたものの、わけのわからない固有名詞の羅列にイライラしていたり、「なんで蠍と飛蝗やねん」と首をひねっている方にも、おすすめしたいと思います。その他、さまざまな映画のスチール写真や舞台作品の簡単な上演史、挿し絵なども豊富です。でも、この挿絵はちょっと凄すぎるというか、怖すぎるというか……。 訳についての好みがどうというよりも、注釈を読んで楽しむ本でしょうね。 (02/20/2005) |

 2004年の暮れに出た「オペラ座の怪人」新訳本。時期的に見て、これもALW版映画の公開にあやかった企画と思われます。この本の「売り」は次の三点です。
[その1] この新訳については、下に並べた目次もご参照ください。いろいろ好みもありましょうが、決まり文句をことごとく外すというのもどんなもんでしょう。第26章のタイトルを「サソリかカエルか」と訳すのは初めて見ました。 [その2] 多くはロン・チェイニー映画のファントム風で、一部がALWミュージカル風。または、とりあえずホラーものらしく「一生懸命怖い顔を考えて描いてみました」風。そして残りは子供の落書き以下。「オペラ座の怪人」がなんだか良くわからないまま描いちゃってる人も何人かいるでしょ、これ。素敵なイラストもいくつかはあるのですが、とにかくやる気が感じられない仕事ぶりです。 [その3] "His Father's Eyes"という短編が載っています。一応（一応ですよ）、分類としては「エリックの過去話」です。これも「ホラーらしさ」を目指して頑張ったのでしょう。おどろおどろしい表現が続きますが、大して山もなくオチもなく終わってしまうので、怖さというより嫌悪感ばかりが残ります。 期待した分、この内容にはがっかりです。こんなに立派なお値段のくせに、ショボい装丁にもがっかり。うかうかと定価で買ってしまった自分にもがっかり。ああがっかり。ほんとにがっかり。DE-がっかり。BEYOND THE がっかり。このままあと30行ぐらいがっかりがっかり言い続けたい気分ですが、面倒なのでやめます。 (02/10/2005) |
